The Design Age Institute and the University of the Third Age have initiated a UK government petition, which proposes mandatory minimum inclusive standards for product packaging. This petition has highlighted an important issue that many have not considered.
In recent years there has been a push to find sustainable design solutions in packaging, but how can the government and the design industry work together to create products that are accessible as well as sustainable?
The petition was inspired by the findings of their recent report ‘Designing the Everyday for a Less Frustrating Life’, which underlined consumer packaging as the most frustrating household item.
With the problem already identified, consultations with groups should be the next step. To engage further with communities and ask questions about what would best serve them. By calling on the government to work with the design industry, the prospect of creating packaging that balances accessibility, safety and sustainability is possible.
Design should be for everyone. Read more about the petition and how you can get involved at www.designage.org.
